Thompson on Secret Service Director Appointment

(WASHINGTON) - Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the below statement following the announcement from Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson that Joseph Clancy has been appointed as Director of the United States Secret Service:

With today's announcement, I am cautiously optimistic that that Mr. Clancy can be the change agent that the Secret Service needs to address its woes. I believe – and am hopeful that the Administration understands – that we need to move the Service forward into a new era and drive change in the organization. Both Congress and the Homeland Security Secretary's independent panel have reiterated that change is desperately needed. I commend Mr. Clancy on his appointment as Director and look forward to discussing with him his vision for restoring confidence in the Secret Service and his plans for filling the seven recently vacated leadership positions. Unfortunately, Mr. Clancy steps into this difficult role at a time when Republicans are needlessly holding up DHS funding when it is clear the agency already faces a resources gap.
